Finally, we’re here, the day you’ve been waiting for the whole week. You woke up early, although you never do, so you could prepare yourself and stay ahead of time.

You went to the bathroom, still sleepy. The mirror seemed dirty. You wondered why the mirror had a weird-looking red circle on it. You went on to clean it, but you couldn’t.

Then reality hits. It’s touchable, but it’s on your forehead.

You then find another one behind your ear, and an emerging one on your cheek, then ask a simple question: Why?!

So, here is why. 4 Reasons Why Acne Form

Step1: Excess Oil

Oil causes a lot of problems at our age. One of them happens when the sebaceous glands in our skin become overreactive. They produce more oil (also known as sebum) than the skin needs to stay lubricated.

Step 2: Hair Follicles Get Clogged

When the body sheds old skin cells, instead of reaching the skin surface, they get stuck with the excess oil, forming two types of plugs:

Whiteheads: Form when the plug stays beneath the skin.

Blackheads: Form when the pore remains open to the air, causing the oil to oxidize and turn black. (Often mistaken for dirt.)

Step 3: Bacteria (AKA Cutibacterium acnes)

(Of course, how could bacteria leave a chance to pour more gasoline on the fire and not take it?)

Although Cutibacterium acnes lives naturally on the skin, when the pore is clogged, it gets trapped inside.

Thinking about it, “trapped” isn’t the right word, because the bacteria will live its best life ever. A lot of oil for it means a lot of nourishment and rapid multiplication.

Step 4: Inflammation

At last, inflammation happens as a result of the excess oil and bacteria. The immune system steps up and reacts to fight the infection, leading to the redness, swelling, and pain we recognize as acne.

Triggers That Cause or Worsen Acne Outbreaks

▪ Hormonal fluctuations: during phases like puberty, pregnancy, or menstrual cycles

▪ Hereditary factors

▪ Medications: such as corticosteroids or testosterone

Pressure: tight clothes, backpacks, helmets

▪ Eating habits: high-sugar diets are not directly related, but acne outbreaks have been documented to happen correspondingly with sugary food intake

How to Prevent Acne

1. Essential Daily Skincare

Gentle cleansing: Wash your face twice daily and after sweating with warm water and a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid harsh scrubs, which can worsen inflammation.

Moisturize: Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer labeled non-comedogenic (so it won’t clog pores), even if you have oily skin.

Sun protection: Many acne treatments increase sun sensitivity. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen daily.

Keep your hands off: Please, please… Leave the pimples alone. If you find it satisfying, pop some bubble wrap or watch some ASMR. No need for more infections or permanent scarring are we clear?

(Ask an expert before choosing products.)

2. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Treatments

For mild to moderate acne, look for products with these active ingredients:

Benzoyl Peroxide: Kills bacteria and removes excess oil. Highly effective for red, pus-filled pimples.

Salicylic Acid: Unclogs pores by dissolving dead skin cells. It works best for blackheads and whiteheads.

Adapalene (Retinoid): Helps prevent pores from clogging in the first place and promotes skin cell turnover.

Azelaic Acid: Gently kills bacteria and helps fade dark spots left behind after a pimple heals.

When to Seek Medical Help

If OTC products don’t show results after 4–8 weeks for your acne, you need to see a dermatologist. They will find out whether you need prescriptions, in-office procedures (chemical peels, for example), or both.
