Surviving Cairo is really hard
(Don't believe me? ask Napoleon and his Military campaign, only 3 years and they went back to their country, it's really hard.)
But your hair surviving Cairo’s weather is much harder. Cairo’s climate is a unique challenge: you’re dealing with intense UV rays, dust, and especially if you’re near the Nile or in late summer you’re in big trouble.
(And yes, if you live almost anywhere in Egypt, you’ll face the same issue, thanks to global warming.)
Is It My Fault?
Chill, it’s not you. Science is actually working against your hair in this kind of weather. Bear with me during this part if you hate science.
First, let’s talk about humidity:
Your hair contains bonds called hydrogen bonds. They’re weak, but they’re the ones that allow you to style your hair, so you must take care of them and give them what they want.
And they don’t want water.
When humidity rises, water molecules from the air enter the hair shaft and break these hydrogen bonds, making your hair chaotic and frizzy. Then the “pinecone effect” worsens things. This happens when the outer layer of your hair absorbs moisture and lifts up, imitating pinecone scales.
Secondly: the heat
Humidity removes the “good” moisture, and heat adds the “bad” kind, breaking down keratin and leading to strength loss. And if that wasn’t enough, heat makes you sweat—and sweat means salt.
Put some salt in your mouth if you don’t know what dehydration feels like.
Cairo… Is That Enough?
No.
Dust
Your hair’s outer layer is now opened, so it’s vulnerable to whatever type of air pollution Cairo has on tonight’s menu. Dust enters, sits, clogs your hair, and irritates your scalp.
Now You’re Asking: “Is There a Way to Deal With This Weather?”
Yes, there is.
(And no, it’s not immigration.)
How to Treat Your Hair in Cairo’s Weather
1. Moisture
I know I’ve said a lot of bad things about it, but when your hair shaft is dry, it becomes thirsty so it expands to soak up the bad moisture from the air.
So fill it up in advance with the good moisture by:
Deep conditioning weekly
Finishing your shower with a cold rinse (this closes your hair shaft so it doesn’t absorb extra moisture)
(Ask your hairstylist/barber what conditioner suits your hair type.)
2. Shut Down Humidity
There is no good or bad humidity. It’s just bad.
Create barriers around your hair using serums or sprays containing silicones (like dimethicone) or natural oils (like jojoba).
A non-negotiable in heat is leave-in conditioner, use that too.
(Ask your hairstylist/barber what leave-in suits your hair type.)
3. Remove the Piles of Dust
Just use shampoo once a week—that’s it.
(Use a good one though. Ask your local salon about it.)
4 .“A Practical Hairstyle Keeps the Doctor Away”
In this age, whether you’re a man or woman, you’re probably a hardworking hustler, grinding here and there. If you are, you’re a hero, so keep going.
But straight, exposed hair isn't that necessary especially on a hot sunny day.
Smart choices are key. Braids, sleek low buns, high ponytails, or even a simple cap are great options because they keep hair contained and reduce the surface area exposed to humidity.
The Expert
It’s great to know how to take care of your hair, but you still need an expert in your life—and that’s your hairstylist or barber. They’re the ones who actually know what suits your hair and lifestyle. From hairstyles to products to routines, they’re the voice of reason you should hear before making any hair decisions.
